Diary of Sick Children

I should start a blog solely to keep records their medical history......

Anyway.

Sunday:
We brought ER to hospital because he had fever on Saturday night, middle of his sleep. He was 40.1°C.

I gave him Bifen on Sunday at 6am but his fever didn't go down enough by 9am. It was 38.3°C. We brought him to KKH.

There, he was given 1st, 10 puffs of ventolin (compared to the usual 4 in most serious case), another exhaler which I can't recall its name, paracetamol and Prednisolone.

After that 1st session, we had to wait half hour each time before ER received the puffs a second and third time again in maximum dosage.

Fever peaked at 39.4°c despite  paracetamol so I was given a sponging kit.

By noon, Dr allowed us to return home after ER's wheezing improved and especially after his oxygen level returned to normal. She prescribed Amoxicilin after noticing something les than normal from his x-Ray.

Monday:
He was well without fever. We kept him at home to rest and medicate.

Tuesday (today)
He went to school happily and back.

Everything was back to normal. Till I woke him from his nap. He was still sleepy so I allowed him to continue resting in the living room. He felt warm. Took temperature. Fever AGAIN. 38.3°C.

WT......

AND HE THREW UP TWICE SINCE THEN.

What is wrong??????

He's still on tonnes of medications from KKH. And I already stopped giving Asumalife. Is he having Stomach Flu or had something nasty?

From AN or from food?

When will this be over?

It's been 4 months since the start of this on-going battle.

When will it end?

Never Recovering

ER had fever few weeks ago. Then AN had fever. And then back to ER.

It was all about the puking last weekend coupled with fever for AN.

Then both took turns at coughing violently since Wednesday. They have never fully recovered from the coughing and sneezing (AN since May and ER since June).

And guess what? ER is having fever. Again.

够了吧, 你什么烂病。。。。到底有完没完?

Edited to add:

Given him Bifen.

Minutes later he weakly announced: "Mummy, Ethan's having fever. Ethan had medicine. Feeling better now. Thank you mummy (for) giving Ethan medicine....."

Few can imagine how much those words soothed a bruised spirit......

Sick Baby

ER had been having runny nose for about a week now and then the fever hit him on Wednesday.

Took him to see the GP and Dr said his airway sounds a little tight. He suggested I continue with the Flixotide puff for 2 weeks (2 puffs twice daily) or till his cough subsides before 'weaning' him (2 puff once daily).

I'll probably not start him on Flixotide again (tough choice. I welcome suggestions!) He's been on it for at least 9 months and long term use affects growth. I see that happening because he was 10.6kg in September but his weight has dropped to be 10.1kg since then and remained at 10.1kg.

I don't know of any growing toddler whose weight went down and stayed low for so long. And he's been eating well!  Dr Lee said he'll pick up soon. I don't want Flixotide to affect his growth again

But then if we do not treat this, he may become asthmatic later in life.

Or should I asked Dr Lee when we see her?

For now I'm giving ventolin puff to ease his breathing :(

He's not panting though. To be fair, he is getting stronger. He hasn't been panting for a long time.

He will recover. And he will continue to grow physically.

His Jab is scheduled on 26 July. I sure hope he recovers by then. These Jabs had been postponed from September last year because he was always unwell whenever it was his vaccination appointment.

She threw up so much it was more practical to hang the bag from her ears.

Just kidding.

For photo fun only. :p

Fever, Now?

Mildly high temperature at 37.6°c yesterday, so I left KFC earlier than usual.

Felt feverish whole of today, so I stayed home. ER didn't spare me; he stuck with me in the room from after lunch to dinner.

Today was wasted.

I'm 38.1°c now.

WHY??

Exam is this Saturday and Sunday. I've been fine this year. Till now.

Please.

It's one important target I have this year. I must fight a fair battle.

I will recover by tomorrow.

ER Fever

It's now ER's turn.

He started sniffing this afternoon and coughing shortly after. The coughing got progressively worse by evening, so I gave him 2 puffs of ventolin. Before it affects his breathing again.

Sigh....

His sniffing and coughing got better after the ventolin (and regular Flixotide). Thank God..

We'll see if visitation can continue tomorrow.

Christmas eve was memorable. CNY eve is no less memorable.

Fever, AN

Both of them had fever on Christmas Eve. And today, AN is having fever at 38C.

She had been coughing since 2 days ago and she's starting to sniff a little. Am expecting fever from the way she coughs.

Just pray ER will be spared. It's going to be CNY celebration in school this Friday. Hope she recovers in time to join her classmates.

She had been healthy in 2012. Most fevers do not go beyond a night and her uncomfortable symptoms didnt bother her for as long as it did in 2011.

We pray the same for this year.

Get well soon baby.

Fever

ER is having fever, 3rd day now. He's 37.8°c now and highest at 39.1°c last night.

There had been no signs of any other discomfort besides the fever. But there's a swell on his left eye lids. And he's blinking his eyes hard.

I thought it could have been his hair getting into his eyes and trimmed some, my first attempt at cutting his hair and he now looks funny. lol! That didn't keep him from blinking.

Then I realize he only starts blinking hard when he's watching the TV. He's ok otherwise.

Dry eyes? Eye infection (but no redness except for the swollen lid that looks like he knocked into it more than it looks infected.)?

He had runny nose and a little cough 2 weeks ago but thank God that didn't result in bronchitis.

It's almost a week since he got better. What can the fever be due to?

And the blinking eyes.

Sigh...

At this rate he's growing, he's going to be a very small boy. :( and hopefully not undernourished...

And I already see his rib cage.

How leh...

Update

ER's temperature went up to 39.7°c in the morning yesterday 6hrs after the last dose of Bifen, so we brought him to Kinderclinic.

Dr Lee checked him and found nothing. I told her about that 1 diarrhea and the throwing up. She suggested it could be a viral fever. And the throwing up could be because the timing between meals are too close (especially breakfast and lunch).

I'm going to have to wake ER up earlier to start his day, do a short nap to allow him to sleep early at night (cycle repeats). So, no more "sleeping like a baby" for him. lol.

Nothing we can do with the fever except to wait for it to be over. I'm just glad there are no infections anywhere.

Dr Lee reviewed his Flixotide treatment too (supposed to see her on 21 Sept).

ER's lungs sound healthy. Hurray to clear lungs and no labored breathing for almost 3 months now.

I'm to continue puffing him: 2 puffs twice a day for whole of September, and reduce the dosage to once every night from October to November before Dr Lee sees him again on 23 Nov.

We have to leave him at home this evening with MIL to settle some stuff. He's been extremely clingy these 2 days coz of fever. Hope he'll b well by afternoon. No fever as of now.

*fingers crossed*

39.7°C

He just woke to throw up. Nothing much came out but he looked as if he was choking on something. Reminded me of when I got one of those diarrhea-puke-till-nothing-comes-out attacks.

So far, he's not had diarrhea. And this is the first puke after he fell sleep at 10.30pm. Thank God.

He was better after taking Bifen at 8pm and started playing: so cute and fun. I wished that was reality but the actual fact is, he was only well because of Bifen and it won't last long.

True enough, the temperature climbed up. At 1am now, it's at 39.8°C.

Disturbs me :(

Why so high? Please burn away whatever you need to, and leave. Ok?

Fever

ER's turn.

Like a game.

He was fine today, except that he threw up again, after nothing more than 2 scoops of porridge this afternoon. He continued eating after that and kept the rest in.

He woke up cheery from his nap but his body felt warm shortly after.

38°C

AN complained of sore throat when she had fever about 3 weeks ago (but her appetite was not affected, so I guess the throat didn't hurt too bad). Maybe ER caught the same thing?

Or, maybe stomachache? Coz he had one loose stool today which I didn't think much of coz if it is diarrhea, it will be frequent, not just one.

And he had been throwing up food quite a fair bit since last week.

Was that already a sign that I mistook for him trying to purge out food not to his taste?

What a lousy mummy I make...had he already been unwell since last week?

He's still on Flixotide for maintenance, already at the end of his second can and moving on to his third. The bronchitis hasn't returned since 8 June.

I'm thankful for that.

Is it coming back?

This is going to be another tough week for us.

Pray for wisdom, patience and health so that I am equipped for whatever is coming.

He's so clingy now, so different from an hour ago... He randomly whines too...where is the discomfort?

Recovering

AN's temperature has gone down from mid 38°c. It's been 6 hours since her last dose. Guess the fever is leaving.

She complained about pain in her throat. That's probably what brought her temperature up.

This girl had been looking forward to celebrating National Day in school and was terribly disappointed that she had to stay home.

The next best appointment will be with her cousins today at SIL's place. She asked if we will still be going, to which I can only tell her we will if she recovers in time. We don't want to make the girls sick.

I hope to bring her there too. She's been looking forward to these celebrations and I can't bear to disappoint. Looking at her temperature now, I think she's going to be a happy girl tis evening.

And thank God AN had been relatively strong this year with more healthy days and faster recovery from being unwell otherwise.

Thank God!

Fever

AN is having fever now: 38.6°c.

No signs of discomfort besides one complaint of stomachache and crying without apparent reason (until my mum thought she felt warm).

She's been well for a while now, since February? Thank God for that.

Praying that she will be well tomorrow. She's been looking forward to the National Day celebration tomorrow in her cheongsam.

Update

Brought AN to doctor. No signs of any infection, just fever and a little cough. Now relying on fever med to relieve discomfort.

Miss Sue called saying there had been 6 absentees today, out of which 4 were cases of tonsillitis. She asked me to monitor AN. According to Dr, AN is fine but I'll be watchful.

And guess what? ER is also having fever now. 38°c..... Nothing much except a little runny nose, again.

Did I just say they recovered few days ago?

Or did I say they NEVER recover?

It's hard to stay positive.....where in the world do all these viruses come from????

High Fever

AN was ok when she went to school in the morning yesterday. She looked fine when I fetched her from school. Then after her nap, she looked tired still. She was lethargic the whole evening and by 8 pm, the moment we reached home, she said she was tired.

It wasn't her usual behaviour, so I thought I should just check her temperature and true enough, she was running a high fever of 39.4°c.

The kids have recovered (finally!). AN had been well for a week and ER for almost a week too. She didn't appear unwell or complain of pain anywhere.

So, fever, where have you come from and what's your reason for visiting this time?

She's staying home today. In her half awake state, she touched my arm and reminded me to inform her teacher that she's having a high fever. I think she's secretly happy.

Just hope this fever successfully burns away whatever that's attempting to harm her.

And today is a good day to finally start working on her project! She wants to do one on Desert for her Layers and Landforms of Earth. I'll probably get up earlier to search the web for info, picture s and craft ideas.

Her first project at K1.

Allergy??

What on earth is wrong with me???

Fever not going away. Now I'm getting hives again. Because of Amoxicilin? In all my 33 years of life, I'm pretty sure I've had it before with no known allergy.

What is wrong?

Just stop already.

Angels

My mum had been coming over to help this past week since my fever started, or even if not here, she came to bring ER to her place.

Because it's weekend, mum knows her place. She is just a maternal grandma, and weekend doesn't belong to her.

But not as if it mattered to the paternal grandma...she went out from morning and is still not back yet. But she made porridge for us and kids before she left. I must learn to be thankful.

Most of all, I have to credit Mr Liow. I had been sleeping a lot since last night. The cough syrup made me so drowsy I had thrown up 3 times already :( I'm not going to take any more of it.

That's not the point.

The point is, Mr Liow could fill the gap I left now that I'm constantly bedridden. He changed the kids, bathed AN, fed ER, got groceries, and kept them occupied so that I could rest. I was sleepy the whole day despite my last cough syrup dosage taken at 6am this morning. That strong huh??

I dozed off while he went to get us dinner.

He made me come into the room to sleep, but I'm not sleepy now. But I'm lying down. Fever still at 38.4°C before panadol. Took so much pills my saliva tastes bitter now. :(

The bitter tastes in my mouth makes me gag.

And because I'm lying down in the room, he's alone with the kids. He's handling them so well, no tears, no struggles.

AN was an angel too. I was drifting in and out of sleep while Mr Liow was out getting dinner. I saw her watching over ER, carrying him off the sofa when he was dangerously near the edge, she packed the coffeetable and didn't just chuck those books and toys away. She put them into their appropriate containers and shelves. And then she gave ER water to drink after opening the cover so that ER could sip, and then she drank her own water.

She then came to sit beside me, and patted me rhythmically.

I could see everything she did but I had no energy to pluck myself out before drifting asleep again.

My angels. I'm thankful for people who love me.

This is day 5 of fever and it still goes up to mid 38 when fever relief wears off..what can this be?

Another Doctor Visit

Day 4 and fever still high. Mr Liow insists I go see a doctor because it's not normal.

Dr recommended I alternate panadol with mefanamic to keep my fever under control. If in 3 days' time, fever is still high, he'll need to put me through further tests.

And I got antibiotics for throat infection.

Times like these, I'm super thankful it's me instead of the kids.
