Diary of Sick Children

I should start a blog solely to keep records their medical history......

Anyway.

Sunday:
We brought ER to hospital because he had fever on Saturday night, middle of his sleep. He was 40.1°C.

I gave him Bifen on Sunday at 6am but his fever didn't go down enough by 9am. It was 38.3°C. We brought him to KKH.

There, he was given 1st, 10 puffs of ventolin (compared to the usual 4 in most serious case), another exhaler which I can't recall its name, paracetamol and Prednisolone.

After that 1st session, we had to wait half hour each time before ER received the puffs a second and third time again in maximum dosage.

Fever peaked at 39.4°c despite  paracetamol so I was given a sponging kit.

By noon, Dr allowed us to return home after ER's wheezing improved and especially after his oxygen level returned to normal. She prescribed Amoxicilin after noticing something les than normal from his x-Ray.

Monday:
He was well without fever. We kept him at home to rest and medicate.

Tuesday (today)
He went to school happily and back.

Everything was back to normal. Till I woke him from his nap. He was still sleepy so I allowed him to continue resting in the living room. He felt warm. Took temperature. Fever AGAIN. 38.3°C.

WT......

AND HE THREW UP TWICE SINCE THEN.

What is wrong??????

He's still on tonnes of medications from KKH. And I already stopped giving Asumalife. Is he having Stomach Flu or had something nasty?

From AN or from food?

When will this be over?

It's been 4 months since the start of this on-going battle.

When will it end?

Her Style (The morning after.....)

AN started throwing up in the morning yesterday. She was perfectly fine the night before.

Brought her to the doctor and was prescribed medicine to stop her vomiting, some probiotics and anti wind syrup.

She threw up minutes after medication each time. And after she drank water. And after those miserable 2-3 bites of bread or scoops of porridge.

She literally had nothing the whole day because whatever went in, came out.

I laid hands to pray for her last night. She slept well for a sick child but kicked a little in her sleep (that's rare).  Nightmares?

She did wake up a few times informing that she needed to throw up but nothing came out.

Her fever returns after Bifen's effect went off each time.

No vomiting. That's more important. All in all she probably threw up more than 10 times during the day already. I'm worried about dehydration. AND DENGUE!

That was yesterday.

I didn't let her go to school today.

She asked to paint and weather was nice and windy.

So she gets to do this, something that she never gets to do in peace when the little boy is around.

She was just teaching me earlier about Henri Mattise, an artist. And she said that an artist doesn't have to paint what everyone else paints. Even black and white zig zag lines is art.

I agreed.

But then I had been wondering why she draws girls with balding hairline. I almost asked if she wanted to add hair on the lady in her painting, when I remembered that Henri Mattise's mum didn't tell him how objects should be drawn. She simply brought him art tools.

Who knows, maybe this will one day be AN's signature drawing that others learn from?

Like my girl says: "Even black and white zig zag lines is art."

:)

Noticed that she tried some Vincent Van Gogh here :)

Mobile Toilet

She threw up so much it was more practical to hang the bag from her ears.

Just kidding.

For photo fun only. :p

Day 2: Puked

Milk in at 10am. No problems. Not much and I didn't dare push.

I gave stick carrot, apples, sausages and banana on a plate. He showed no interest. I pushed a piece of banana into his mouth at 1.30pm and he liked it. He didn't want to feed himself, so I did. Gave him tiny sized bites...and after about 3 pieces, he made a funny face and threw up.

:(

No sign of anything except milk from 10am.

I didn't get too upset this time. Just disappointed, but it's ok.

I'm just glad I didn't scare him by reacting negatively towards the throwing up.

Gave him 160mls of milk shortly after and he finished most of it.

Day 1: No Puke

It's hard to break out of his biological clock. Attempting to wake him at 8am was suicide, for me.

He dragged me back in to the room and laid down, chanting "men mem" as he sobbed pitifully. I gave in and nursed him.

He was up at 9.45am. I gave him fresh milk in a straw bottle, allowing him to reach for him at will. I heated up noodles from the dinner on Sun for myself. He wanted some, so I let him feed himself. We were at the coffee table and he was standing. Was messy but it's ok. He had a wee bit. Ok too.

As long as he's not stressed up at the sight of food.

I fed him milk which he drank a few spoonfuls of. Drank the remaining myself because it's been an hour or so at room temperature.

I offered cheese rings in a bowl shortly after, then cubes of cream cheese. He rejected both.

He didn't want my lunch, and I let him be. Before nap, I fed him 120mls of pediasure. He hungrily accepted but stopped at about 100mls.

He was super cranky when he woke up. In fact, he hasn't been his cheery self for weeks. He still plays and can be really adorable but the very uncooperative behaviour, in addition to his food hating campaign made it hard for me to get much done.

Dinner was at my mum's. He didn't want dinner either :(

I know I promised to keep cool but he had only 100 calories by evening. I can't help worrying by then. And he was super cranky. And super clingy. He would usually follow my mum to playground, and be really excited. And mum would help me shower him.

Not today. He wouldn't let me out of sight. Even at home, he would follow me to the restroom when he would usually be at ease playing, knowing mummy can't disappear from the toilet.

My sweet Mr Liow helped feed the last milk session and ER finished 160mls.

For once in days, he hasn't puked at all.

Total input: 260mls.

Praying that he'll be more comfy in the presence of food tomorrow...and that the Lord will hold me as I go through another day, watching my baby grow skinnier. I pray he'll not throw up tomorrow, that he'll get more than 260mls and most important, receive nutrients from whatever I offer.

Puke Again

Everyday?

I'm so sick of it. Of feeding him, of puke, of rejection. Never a day of positive something that can lift me up, even if a little.

He slept early last night. No milk. The only things that got in his system was that 200mls of milk in the afternoon and tiny bowl of porridge.

Woke him up early today and it wasn't hard. Made him milk and he threw up after 3 mouthfuls.

I am going crazy...all the hellish horrors are back! Full force.......

I lost control and cried while clearing the mess. Everyday? First meal of the day? 15 hours since his last meal?

He got frightened and cried too..

I washed him up and hugged him. My heartached...he just have felt terrified...

Why does sucky situations never fail to leave me? Why do I get kids that hate everything FOOD?

WHY??

AND DON'T ASK ME WHY MY KIDS DON'T EAT. I CAN'T EVEN FIND AN ANSWER. WHY DON'T I JUST GO DIE? SUCH A SIMPLE THING ALSO CANNOT DO.

Or is this just a sick nightmare? Maybe I'll wake up soon.

39.7°C

He just woke to throw up. Nothing much came out but he looked as if he was choking on something. Reminded me of when I got one of those diarrhea-puke-till-nothing-comes-out attacks.

So far, he's not had diarrhea. And this is the first puke after he fell sleep at 10.30pm. Thank God.

He was better after taking Bifen at 8pm and started playing: so cute and fun. I wished that was reality but the actual fact is, he was only well because of Bifen and it won't last long.

True enough, the temperature climbed up. At 1am now, it's at 39.8°C.

Disturbs me :(

Why so high? Please burn away whatever you need to, and leave. Ok?

Test of Patience

Some days, things just cannot go right.

I've not mentioned that ER throws up a lot, have I? Every 3rd lunch on average. Or randomly when he cries, not because of punishment but because I'm out of sight.

I'm so sick of clearing puke. So frequently!

But it's ok. It's my job.

Today, same thing. He ate about 2 strands of noddles for lunch. Obviously, that's not enough.

So I gave him milk after that. Not much, for goodness sake. 100mls!

And he threw up. Milk, bits of noodles. Lots of milk. Must be all out, including breakfast.

I cleared the mess and had to mop. Guess what? The mop broke.

IT BROKE!

what a joke.

Thank goodness I had another mop but it's not as absorbent as my first. So there were puddles on the floor.

ER simply refused to sit. He kept coming to look for me (I was extremely upset by then and I guess he just wanted to come check on me. He even came to hug my legs...but I was fuming and didn't return his hug.

I love babies but am very sure I'm not pre-installed with enough patience for them when they turn into toddlers. Was the same with AN and these scenarios just opened up new cans of worms. They bring back those bad memories!

Am finally done (argh....heck. Some parts are randomly mopped and this spare mop is so dirty...my specklessly vacuumed floor this morning is now littered with dust, hair and black unknown dirt).

ER is acting cute to get my attention. I am not in the mood to play with him. And I can feel I look grumpy.

He just baby-talked me (reminded me of AN long ago) and smiled.

Sigh....

ER wins.

I'm still affected by the saga earlier (and every few days...) But I can't be upset with the little baby for long. He didn't even understood mummy was so angry with him earlier for not sitting still.

Baileys and Maen NEVER stepped around when I mopped the floor. If only they can become humans...

Getting Worse

ER's runny nose last week was not the real deal, even though he had fever as well.

The bronchitis starts now.

The cough had been bad since last Thursday and that was when he started panting as well.

Other than the cough, he didn't throw up (from coughing violently due to phlegm) much. But since last night, it got worse. He threw up once last night. And tonight, from the time he fell asleep till now (only about 2 hours), he had already puked, twice, lots of phlegm both times.

This is the real deal.

It's almost 2 weeks. Hope he recovers soon and hope AN remains healthy. ER can NOT keep away from his sister.

Dr will review him on 8th June. I have no idea what to expect.

Puke and Diarrhoea

This happens to me quite frequently. I puked and passed loose stools so much that I ended up in the hospital for drips once every few months. It happened during my first trimester with ER. Thank God ER was fine!

In just 1 yr, this is the third time. I have the necessary medicines on standby and have stopped the torturous symptoms from causing me distress, at least once.

It didn't seem to work this time. I'm now passing transparent liquid stool and have thrown up once. :( :(

I hated this! HATE THIS FEELING!

But, better me than the kids.

Mr Liow sleeping with them now. I hope I recover without much of the usual drama...

Update

ER woke up crying every 10 mins or so last night because he couldn't catch his breath properly. On several occasions, he coughed so hard he threw up again. I was exasperated after a few rounds of changing him and myself because he was throwing up every 15 mins on average from 11pm to 3am. The laundry in the bathroom to rinse of his puke is as high as 5 days' worth of laundry in the basket. On the other hand, I was relieved that he could breath better after throwing up.

I nebulised him at 2am and stuck the fever suppositories up his anus. From about 3am, he started to sleep better, still waking up to cough quarter-hourly but he hasn't puked since.

For both yesterday and today, Mr Liow had been helping me get AN ready for school. There wasn't much about ER he could help me with when our boy is exceptionally clingy to me because he's sick. So he's helping me with other stuff. Poor AN hadn't much time with me for 2 days and when I went out to say goodbye to her before school, she cried.saying she wants me.

Sorry baby. Mummy needs to care for the baby. For some reasons, ER seems to be weaker than AN used to. Maybe second children get to sample more viruses and bacterias because of an older sibling?

Anyway, the boy is finally sleeping soundly. I'm gg to catch some forty winks too.

And Then She Threw Up

AN coughed so hard she threw up once on her pillow. And subsequently twice more. She woke me up both times, saying she felt like puking. So she did.

It was bile.

Did an online check and realised it could be that we gave her medicine on an empty stomach.

*phew*

I was worried it was stomach flu again but she wasn't having fever. No diarrhoea either. She did complain of tummyache last night but was back to normal after I applied Ru Yi Oil on her.

At least we now know she's throwing up coz she had nothing in her stomach for the anti-inflammatory medicine to attack.

Will feed her something before each dose later.

And the little brother actually slept through all 3 episodes of rushing to toilet, cleaning up, bright lights and his sister's cries from her discomfort. And that was....GOOD!

ER the Merlion & the Sick Birthday Girl

Both kids are having flu. ER has recovered from his fever but AN's fever is still over 39°c when the effects of her fever medication wears off. Ironically, it was her birthday yesterday. What an eventful day!

Was nursing ER to sleep last night and he coughed. The cough was bad enough it forced whatever he had drank for the past few hours to come back up. That was so much puke!

Their poor bed. First was AN's whole bladderful of pee last week and now ER's whole stomachful of milk + cereals. I REALLY need to steam the bed soon.

This time, the virus seems stronger. It gave both of them high fever and the flu-like symptoms hit them both at the same time instead of one before the other.

And this time, I am also infected. My nose is blocked and throat feels itchy. Hope the fever spares me.

Each time ER has cough or stuffy/runny nose, I can't help but worry about it developing into bronchitis.

Sigh..

It was really much easier with just one child. Less exposure to viruses (AN did not fall ill as much in her 1st 3 years of life till lately. ) And because she's sick, the viruses conveniently decides on strengthening ER's immunity as well.

It's AN's chalet on tomorrow. I'm sure she will enjoy herself. We had wanted to celebrate her birthday in school but couldn't. This poor girl was still asking when we'll have the party with her friends.

Sigh..
